The second Gen-Z International Eco-Environmental Journalism Workshop was held in Chengdu from September 1 to 4. The four-day event brought together 34 international young people in China from 19 countries to serve as young journalists. Through classroom sessions, field trips and photography, they explored Chengdu, known as a "park city blessed with snow mountains," and examined how people, cities, and nature can coexist in harmony. The participants worked in six teams to produce projects reflecting on Chengdu's approach to sustainable development. They then took their observations of the city's environmental experience, and of China's broader green transition, back to their home countries.

Field Visit Site

Adopting a framework of "classroom lectures + field research + content creation", this workshop delivered training across four modules: global environmental governance, biodiversity conservation, international communication of environmental journalism, and new media storytelling.

During the field trip, participants visited Luxelakes Park Community. They took a boat tour to study sustainable aquatic ecosystems and explored CPI Island, a demonstration site for eco-friendly urban renewal. The group also visited the No.1 Recycled Water Plant of Sichuan Tianfu New Area, Xinglong Lake and its planning exhibition hall, plus the near-zero-carbon community pilot in Laolong Village. Through these site visits, participants gained first-hand understanding of urban ecological governance, green planning and low-carbon production.

During the review and closing ceremony, Pu Shilu, deputy director of the International Cooperation and Exchange Office and director of the International Students Office at Sichuan University, expressed her hope that the participants would, as young journalists, tell authentic and multidimensional stories about China. Li Penghui, head of the Public Communication Office at the Center for Environmental Education and Communications of Ministry of Ecology and Environment, encouraged the young people not only to become keen observers, but also to grow into excellent storytellers and actively share China's green voice with the world. The organizers then presented certificates of completion to all the participants. The works produced by the participants during the workshop will continue to be shared on social media platforms in China and abroad, helping the world see a beautiful China.
