Snow Leopard Captured on Camera in Chongzhou, Chengdu

Recently, infrared cameras in the Chongzhou, Chengdu section of the Giant Panda National Park captured two images of a snow leopard on the same day.

In the morning clip, the snow leopard was moving up a rocky ridge. Its grayish—white fur, with black markings, merged with the surrounding rocks and lichen, giving it a majestic and powerful appearance.

By the afternoon, the same snow leopard had been captured on camera again. Instead of moving on, it paused and scratched the ground with its hind paws, which is a characteristic scent-marking action used to establish territory.

The Chengdu section has increased its efforts to protect snow leopards in recent years by utilizing technology and specialized patrols to safeguard their alpine habitat. The deployment of hundreds of infrared cameras has created an integrated “space—air—ground” monitoring network that tracks the range, population, and movements of snow leopards. The advancement of high-altitude ecosystem restoration can protect prey species like blue sheep and forest musk deer and the ecological corridors which have been constructed can connect snow leopard habitats and facilitate genetic exchange. Meanwhile, the introduction of early warning systems and compensation mechanisms for human—wildlife conflict, including insurance for local residents against wildlife damage, and the formation of professional patrol teams can conduct routine high—mountain patrols and combat illegal poaching.

The reappearance of the snow leopard in the Chengdu area is not only a testament to a healthy and stable alpine ecosystem but also a clear indication of the region's success in biodiversity conservation.
