On April 7 and April 8, two of Asia’s top sporting events including 2026 Asian Skateboarding Championship and World Climbing Asia Championship officially opened in Meishan, Sichuan, a nationally renowned historical city and the hometown of the poet Su Dongpo.

In the 2026 World Climbing Asia Championship, which also serve as a qualifier for the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, there are many official events including rock climbing and speed climbing. A total of 210 athletes from 16 countries and regions, including China, Kazakhstan, and Singapore, took part. The 2026 Asian Skateboarding Championships included men’s and women’s park events as well as men’s and women’s street events, attracting 172 athletes from 13 countries and regions, including China, Australia, and Malaysia. Competitors showcased speed, skill, and strength across the skateboard park and climbing wall.

The simultaneous hosting of these two major Asian championships is an important step in Meishan’s efforts to develop into a “city of sports and culture, a destination for events and tourism”. In addition to giving competitors from all around Asia a stage, the events significantly contribute to the growth and popularity of new sports like climbing and skateboarding. Additionally, the tournaments foster talent for the Asian Games and strengthen cross-continental cultural exchanges through athletics. In addition to further enhancing Meishan’s new image as a hub integrating events, culture, and tourism, the successful staging of the events injects strong sports-driven momentum into its superior urban development.
