The Sichuan-Chongqing 1000-kV UHV AC project is a key project in the national power development plan during 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), with a total investment of 28.631 billion yuan. As China's first UHV AC project in a high-altitude area, it is a landmark project of milestone significance following the 1000-kV UHV AC test demonstration project from the southeastern part of Shanxi Province to Nanyang and then to Jingmen. The project passes through eight cities, prefectures or districts, namely Ganzi Prefecture, Ya'an City, Meishan City, Leshan City, Neijiang City, Ziyang City in Sichuan Province, and Tongnan District and Tongliang District in Chongqing. It has newly built 1,316 kilometers of 1000-kV transmission lines. Four 1000-kV substations, namely Ganzi, Tianfunan, Chengdudong, and Tongliang, have been newly built in Sichuan and Chongqing, with a total substation capacity of 24 million kVA. After the project is put into operation, the voltage level of the main grid in Southwest China will be upgraded from 500 kV to 1000 kV. Each year, it can deliver a maximum of 35 billion kWh of clean electricity from western Sichuan and other areas to the load centers of Sichuan and Chongqing. This is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of nearly 10 million households. This project is of great prominence in ensuring the safe and reliable power supply in the southwest region this winter and next spring as well as in the future, enhancing the power transmission capacity in western Sichuan, accelerating the construction of a new energy system and developing new quality productive forces, promoting innovative breakthroughs in UHV transmission technology at high altitudes, and boosting the upstream and downstream industries to support the high-quality development of the local economy and society.(by Li Kele)
