On October 8 and October 16, infrared cameras captured snow leopards in the Chengdu section of the Giant Panda National Park.

Snow leopards, known as the "King of the Snow Mountains," typically inhabit high-altitude areas between 2,000 and 6,000 meters, regions covered in snow year-round. In Chengdu, the nearest snow leopard habitat is roughly 70 kilometers from the city, with snow-capped peaks providing a sanctuary for this apex predator. This snow leopard habitat is now part of the Chengdu section of the Giant Panda National Park.

A two-year survey on snow leopards in this area was recently completed. The study spanned the potential snow leopard habitats across Dayi, Chongzhou, Pengzhou, and Dujiangyan, covering about 440 square kilometers. Over the course of the study, 89 infrared cameras were installed and retrieved, resulting in 37,655 infrared camera data entries and 39 samples of wild snow leopards.

In the Chengdu section, snow leopard habitats cover a total of 286.64 square kilometers, with 116.80 square kilometers classified as optimal habitat and 169.84 square kilometers as secondary habitat. Habitat distribution is mainly influenced by ground temperature, with human activities such as grazing imposing certain limitations.

The snow leopard-focused survey has enabled authorities to gather critical information on the species' population, habitat range, and threats within this area. By analyzing these findings, the park aims to develop theoretical foundations and targeted conservation strategies to support the stable growth of the snow leopard population, furthering biodiversity conservation efforts.
