In 1981, to honor China's only temple that jointly venerates both ruler and minister—the Wuhou Shrine—four streets, Nanjiao Road in South Jiefang Road, Old Station Street, New Station Street, and Chengqing Street, along with the initial section of the Sichuan-Xizang Road, were merged into one and named Wuhouci Street.
Wuhouci Street
Today, Wuhouci Street stretches nearly two kilometers long, connecting to Jiangxi Street in the northeast and extending southward to the intersection of Gaosheng Bridge at the southern and western sections of the First Ring Road.
At No. 231 Wuhouci Street, the only temple that jointly venerates both ruler and minister—the Wuhou Shrine—still exudes the atmosphere of the Three Kingdoms era.
Wuhou Shrine
With vermillion walls, dark green eaves, and towering bamboo groves, the layout of Wuhou Shrine mirrors the classical style of Chinese gardens. Meandering streams, graceful bridges, pavilions, and terraces form a harmonious landscape with the sky above, forming a delightful contrast.
In 2005, on the eastern side of Wuhou Shrine, Jinli Ancient Street was built—an ancient-style street bringing together food, entertainment, and shopping under one roof.
Jinli Ancient Street
Stretching 550 meters, Jinli Ancient Street is modeled after late Ming and early Qing western Sichuan architecture. Beneath its historical façade lies a bustling commercial street, filled with a variety of food stalls, tea houses, and shops. Its cultural core draws from both the Three Kingdoms legacy and Chengdu’s rich local traditions, creating a space where history and modern life intertwine. Thanks to its prime location next to Wuhou Shrine, Jinli remains a popular destination, welcoming a steady flow of visitors.
Jinli Ancient Street
Amidst the busy urban landscape, Wuhouci Street preserves a deep historical and cultural heritage. As seasons change and times progress, this cultural treasure remains a steadfast guardian of Chengdu's past. Its enduring presence testifies to the city's constant evolution, making it an irreplaceable landmark in the heart of Chengdu's historical narrative.
