On May 13, the 17th Zongzi Street for the upcoming Loong Boat Festival in Ma’an Community, Simaqiao Subdistrict of Chengdu’s Jinniu District, officially opened with drums, fireworks, and lively performances, heralding the joyous arrival of the traditional holiday.

As a culinary icon of Chengdu, the Zongzi Street on Ma’an East Road buzzed with energy from dawn. Storefronts overflowed with fresh green bamboo leaves and plump glutinous rice, while the air carried the rich aroma of steaming zongzi. Skilled wrappers deftly folded leaves into cones, stuffed them with rice and fillings, and tied them into neat pyramids—piling up mountains of the iconic treats. Stalls displayed rows of creative variations, from classic pork and red bean to modern twists like cheese and spicy crayfish, tantalizing every palate.

This year, vendors revamped store signs and packaging with eye-catching designs featuring Chengdu’s beloved panda motifs, aiming to spread local culture through every bite. “I come every year for the lively vibe and the endless flavors—perfect for gifts or family feasts,” said Ms. Wang, a customer clutching her freshly bought zongzi with a grin.
