Starting this April, love stories in Chengdu's Dayi County will carry an exclusive romantic certification. Newlyweds who register at the Dayi County Civil Affairs Bureau Marriage Registration Office will receive a special gift—a custom-designed marriage certificate.
The certificate adopts a traditional retro painting style, meticulously replicating classic marital documentation. Its design incorporates elements from The Phoenix Seeking a Mate (Feng Qiu Huang), a poetic masterpiece celebrated for millennia, infusing the certificate with timeless elegance.
Upon unfolding the certificate, the hibiscus—Chengdu's city flower—blooms vibrantly across the page. Crimson “double happiness” window cutouts radiate festive joy, while auspicious clouds and the theme “Love in Chengdu” are exquisitely rendered in Sichuan embroidery artistry. Phrases like “Jade peaks bear deep affection, hibiscus carries profound devotion; two families unite, a blessed bond forever sealed…” highlight Chengdu's unique wedding vows. Local landmarks, Sichuan Opera face-changing, lidded bowl tea, and snow-capped mountains intertwine to form a distinctive city skyline on the certificate's front, blending cultural heritage with romantic symbolism.
The reverse side features traditional dragon-and-phoenix motifs as subtle patterns—a majestic dragon and a graceful phoenix encircling the central “double happiness” symbol and “Love in Chengdu,” symbolizing heavenly-ordained harmony. The certificate is printed on specially treated archival-quality paper for lasting preservation.
To date, the Dayi County Marriage Registration Office has issued 47 custom certificates.
From the solemn vows of ancient “Three Letters and Six Etiquettes” to today's state-sanctioned tokens of love, marriage certificates have always embodied humanity's deepest reverence for matrimony. May all newlyweds enjoy a harmonious union for a century and everlasting happiness.
